Alabang peppered reliever Romeo Jasmin with a nine-run binge in the fifth inning as the Tigers defeated Batangas, 11-9, in Baseball Philippines’ first out-of-town game at the Libjo field in Batangas City last Sunday.
Carlos Laurel blasted a two-run hit then capped it with a go-ahead run homer in his second-at-bat in a huge Alabang charge in the fifth frame, shoving the Tigers to the lead after trailing, 1-9.
A solo home run by Carlos’ brother Matt Laurel in the sixth gave Alabang a two-run cushion and the Tigers went to on post the come-from-behind victory in the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.
“It was all breaks of the game,” said coach Jeffrey Santiago, who returns to Alabang after steering the Makati Mariners to the inaugural 2007 championship.
“Maybe they thought that the game was in the bag when they took out their starting pitcher but it just happened that our reserves stepped up,” said Santiago.
The win tied Alabang with Cebu, which defeated Dumaguete, 5-3, at Rizal Memorial baseball stadiumg also last Sunday. Defending back-to-back champion Manila shows the way with a 2-0 slate from its back-to-back wins over Taguig over the weekend.
Aris Oruga and Inigo Olivarez came through with a pair of two-run hits and Adrian Bernardo turned in RBIs as the Tigers feasted on Jasmin to spark the big Alabang fightback.
Carlo Banzon hit the first home run, Vio Roxas blasted a two-run bomb and Ferdinand Recto smacked a grand slam homer all in the first inning as Batangas raced to a 6-0 lead.
Starter Vlady Eguia struck out six batters for Batangas, including five straight but had to leave the game in the fourth inning after reaching the maximum 50 pitches allowed to a player to be eligible to pitch in his team’s next game.
Carlos Laurel keyed Alabang’s fiery run with a two-run bases-loaded single, scoring Jeffrey Ardio and Gabby Baroque while Bernardo’s RBI single pushed Laurel home. Oruga’s two-run double and an Ardio RBI double kept Alabang close at 7-9.
Olivarez tied the game with a two-out, two-run double before Carlos Laurel hit a double to left field to score Olivarez in his second turn to bat to wrest control.
The league is backed by Harbour Centre, The Heritage Park, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Philippine Olympic Committee, PSC, Philippine Amateur Baseball Association, Philippine Umpires Association and DZSR Sports Radio 918. PR

1 p.m. – Dumaguete vs. Cebu

(Libjo field, Batangas City, Batangas)

Manila got off to a high note in its quest for its third consecutive crown as the Sharks beat the Taguig Patriots, 11-3, Saturday in the Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The Harbour Centre-backed Sharks opened Series 8 with an all-around effort on offense and defense that led to the lopsided victory over the Patriots in this Community Sports Inc.-organized league.
Manila starter and Series 7 Finals Most Valuable Player Charlie Labrador, who was awarded the Jun Bernardino Trophy during the opening ceremony for his positive values on and off the field, got the Sharks going allowing just one hit in four innings.
Marvin Malig capped off Manila’s onslaught on offense with a two-run double in the Sharks’ four-run splurge in the eighth frame that sealed the win in the league sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.
“Our mindset is that we are not the defending champions, we still have to work hard for the third championship,” said Manila coach Jhoel Palanog, whose Sharks won their second straight crown against Batangas in Series 7.
Jarus Inobio’s run scoring hit finished off a three-run second inning for Manila before Edward Landicho’s RBI single and Rommel Roja’s sacrifice fly in the next frame gave the Sharks a 5-0 lead.
Former Manila Shark Mick Natividad got the Patriots on the board at the top of the sixth with an RBI single but the Sharks got that back when Inobio crossed home plate on a throwing error and Christian Galedo hit a run-scoring single for a 7-1 advantage.
Jerwyn Fernandez and Jeff Hardillo led Taguig’s two-run eighth but Manila fired back again with Malig finishing off the bottom half of the eighth with a long shot to right field to score Jennard Pareja and Galedo.
Manila goes for the early lead in Series 8 as it faces Taguig once again at 9 a.m. in the first game of a twinbill at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. Batangas, meanwhile, opens Series 8 in front of its home fans as the Bulls battle the Alabang Tigers in Libjo field in Batangas City.
Commissioner Chito Loyzaga of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) representative Frank Elizalde declared Series 8 open during a simple opening rites also attended by representatives from the United States Embassy and City of Manila.
The league is also supported by Harbour Centre, The Heritage Park, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Philippine Olympic Committee, PSC, Philippine Amateur Baseball Association, Philippine Umpires Association and DZSR Sports Radio 918.

Sharks open bid for 3rd crown vs Patriots

Game on Saturday
(Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium)
11 a.m. - Opening ceremony
1 p.m. - Manila vs. Taguig

Manila begins its campaign for an unprecedented third straight championship in Baseball Philippines as it tangles with Taguig on Saturday's long match kicking off the league's Series 8 at the Rizal Memorial baseball stadium.
Gametime is set at 1 p.m. with the Harbour Centre-backed Sharks raring to make it three-in-row on a team built around Series 7 Finals MVP Charlie Labrador and fellow hurler Jon Jon Robles and sluggers Marvin Malig, Christian Nino Tator, Jarus Inobio, Christian Galedo, Saxon Omandac and Paco Tantuico.
"The core is intact. We are the first team to win back-to-back and we want to win three-in-a-row," said Manila assistant team manager Eric Cadavillo.
The new series will actually fire off at 11 a.m. for the opening rites expected to be graced by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose "Peping Cojuangco Jr. and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia
The Sharks swept the Batangas Bulls in last year's finale to become the first team in the three-year history of the Community Sports Inc.-organized league to win back-to-back championships.
The Patriots, on the other hand, are out to bounce back from a disappointing Series 7 campaign after they failed to make it to the postseason after a 1-4 record in the league backed by Harbour Centre, The Heritage Park, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, POC, PSC, Philippine Amateur Baseball Association, Philippine Umpires Association and DZSR Sports Radio 918.
The Taguig team of Vice Mayor George Elias will lean on veteran pitcher Darwin Dela Calzada, Pepe Jose, Gil Encarnado, Denver Largo and Mick Natividad.
The top two teams after the double round robin elims will gain twice-to-beat advantage against the third and fourth place teams in the semis. The finals will be a best-of-three affair.PR
