Sharks, Dolphins begin title showdown

Games on Saturday
(Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium)
9 a.m. – UST vs. Phl U-18 team (exhibition game)
1 p.m. – Cebu vs. Manila

Manila and Cebu clash on Saturday in the opener of their best-of-three
series for Baseball Philippines Series 8 championship with odds just about even
between the league’s fancied teams.

The Sharks and the Dolphins split their previous faceoffs for the BP crown,
making their third encounter too close to call. Manila beat Cebu to bag the
Series 6 plum last year and avenge their setback in Series 2 finals in 2007.

The Dolphins edged the Sharks, 9-7, in their first round meeting this year,
handing the reigning back-to-back champions their only loss in Series 8. But
Manila got back at Cebu again, hacking out an 8-6 victory right at the Dolphins’
turf last June in the league’s first out-of-Luzon game.

The opener is set at 1 p.m. at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. Game 2 is
set tomorrow (Sunday) while Game 3, if necessary, will be on July 30, according
to the organizing Community Sports Inc. Game 1 will be aired on a delayed
basis on July 30, starting at 3 p.m. on NBN-4.

The Sharks are actually gunning for their third straight crown as they also beat
the Batangas Bulls in last year’s Series 7 finale of the tournament sponsored by
Rawlings and Gatorade and backed by Harbour Centre, The Heritage
Park, Emperador Distillers, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Victory Liner and
Clark Development Corp.

Also on tap is an exhibition game pitting the Philippine Under-18 team against
UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas at 9 a.m.

Manila, Cebu arrange another clash for championship

Manila and Cebu arranged another clash for the championship after overcoming their foes Saturday in the semifinals of the Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The two-time defending champion Sharks put up another defensive stand to defeat Taguig, 2-0, while the Dolphins scattered 15 hits to blow past Batangas, 9-2, to set up their third clash for the title in the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Rawlings and Gatorade.
 .
Cebu and Manila split their two previous title showdowns with the Dolphins taking the Series 2 crown before the Sharks bagged the Series 6 crown.

Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series is set on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Pitchers Charlie Labrador and Jon Jon Robles yielded a combined five hits as the Sharks’ fielders stranded eight runners on base to blank the Patriots to book a place into their fourth consecutive finals dating back to 2008 in Series 5.

Marvin Malig’s RBI singles in the first and eighth inning proved to be enough as pitching and defense did it for the Harbour Centre-backed Sharks.

Cebu’s Jonash Ponce, meanwhile, hit a two-run double in the second inning as the Dolphins put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning backed by a two-run double by Miggy Corcuera.

“We had a hard time with Taguig’s defense and we haven’t played for almost a month. But we will always depend on pitching and defense and that is what the team showed,” said Manila coach Jhoel Palanog.

The league is also backed by are backed by Harbour Centre, The Heritage Park, Emperador Distillers, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Victory Liner and Clark Development Corp.

Taguig starting pitcher Justin Payongayong had a complete game yielding seven hits but didn’t get the run support because of Manila’s fierce defense. The Patriots had five hits and had seven runners in scoring position (runner on second or third) but could not get the hits to put a run across.

Jennald Pareja walked, reached second on a Nino Tator groundout and scored when Malig blasted a hit to left center field to start off the game.

Pareja was also the recipient of Malig’s run-scoring hit in the eighth on a bloop single to shallow left field after Pareja singled, stole second and reached third on a single by Christian Galedo.

The three-peat seeking Sharks go up against the Taguig Patriots at 9 a.m. while
the Dolphins, also aiming for their third title in the league, battle the

Sharks, Dolphins seek to set title duel

Games on Saturday
(Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium)
9 a.m. – Manila vs. Taguig
1 p.m. – Cebu vs. Batangas

Manila and Cebu try to arrange a showdown for Baseball Philippines Series 8
championship as they face separate rivals on Saturday in the semifinal
round at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The Sharks and the Dolphins, who finished 1-2 in the elims for twice-to-beat
edges, need only to win over the Taguig Patriots and the Batangas Bulls,
respectively, to advance to the finals of the league organized by Community
Sports Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.

A pair of reversals, however, will set the stage for sudden deaths tomorrow.

Manila, the back-to-back champion, is fancied over Taguig in the 9 a.m. match,
while the Cebu-Batangas match at 1 p.m. remains a toss-up.

The Sharks topped the elims with a 9-1 (win-loss) record while the Dolphins
posted an 8-2 slate to clinch the semis incentives.

Manila swept Taguig in their two faceoffs in the elims with the Patriots making
their first postseason stint since the BP Series 4 in 2008.

Cebu and Batangas, on the other hand, have previously met in the playoffs with
the Bulls defeating the Dolphins in the BP Series 7 semis en route to a
runner-up finish.

The Dolphins and the Bulls likewise split their two-game series in the elims,
making their showdown a match to watch in the league also backed by Harbour
Centre, The Heritage Park, Emperador Distillers, Philippine Transmarine
Carriers, Victory Liner and Clark Development Corp.

The best-of-three championship series is set July 16.

Manila tries to finish off Alabang at resumption of their match that was rained out last May 8 as the Sharks try to formalize their hold of the top seeding in the semifinal round of Baseball Philippines Series 8 at Clark Field Parade Grounds in Pampanga today (Saturday, June 25).
The Sharks lord it over the field with an 8-1 slate, one game ahead of the Cebu Dolphins (7-2), and would want to firm up their hold of the lead with another victory in their 10 a.m. encounter with the also-ran Tigers (2-7).
Manila built an 8-4 lead in the fifth inning when play was halted due to rain.
If they keep the No. 1 spot, the Sharks will have a twice-to-beat advantage against the No. 4 team in the semis of the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.
Cebu, meanwhile, battles Dumaguete in a crucial match at 1 p.m. in the second game of the sixth out-of-town offering of the league backed by Victory Liner, Clark Development Corporation, SM City Clark and San Miguel Corp.
Cebu remains in the hunt of the top spot since a victory by the Dolphins coupled by a loss by the Sharks would give Cebu the No. 1 seeding by virtue of a superior batting average.

The Dolphins face the Taguig Patriots (1-2) in the 9 a.m. opener while the
three-peat seeking Sharks are heavily favored against the winlessDumaguete

Cebu and Manila are pacing Series 8 so far with a 5-1 win-loss card, three games

Joseph Orillana, Alpha Turaray and Dabawenyo Edmer del Socorro combined for a three-hit
job as Cebu got back at Batangas, 9-0, to gain a share of the lead with Manila
in Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

With their hurlers frustrating the Bulls in morning drizzle, Christian Maghanoy,
Miggy Corcuera and Del Socorro took care of Cebu’s offense as the Dolphins made
up for their 5-8 to the Bulls last Saturday that snapped their back-to-back
victories to open their campaign in the league organized by Community Sports
Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.

“Our pitchers played well and it got us going and our hitters bounced back after
we struggled against their pitchers last week,” said Cebu coach Isaac Bacarisas.

Maghanoy hit a bases-loaded double to advance Corcuera and Orillana home while
Joannard Pareja reached home on an error in the second inning.

Corcuera made it 4-0 after a double that scored Del Socorro, who opened the
third frame with a double. In the seventh, Corcuera advanced Del Socorro home
again with an RBI single.

After Maghanoy raced home on a throwing error, Del Socorro took over with a
double in the eighth, advancing Ramil Magno, Reynaldo Calma and Jonash Ponce
home.

The pitching rotation of Romeo Jasmin, Vlady Eguia, Tsuyoshi Horibata and
Vincent Ching gave up 15 hits in the game after Randy De Leon’s five-run
eight-hit complete game for Batangas last Saturday.

Cebu tries to keep its win run going as the Dolphins face the Batangas Bulls at resumption of action in Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium today.

The Dolphins pace the six-team field with back-to-back victories, including a 9-7 win over two-time defending champion Manila Sharks last week.

Following a spate of injuries and player-absences in Series 7 dominated by Manila, Cebu is now ready to contend for the crown in the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.

“I think we now have a chance against the top teams like Manila and Batangas because we are now a complete team,” said Cebu coach Isaac Bacarisas.

Veterans Edmer Del Socorro and Jonash Ponce, who missed Cebu’s games in Series 7 due to various reasons, came through with big hits in a five-run sixth inning as the Dolphins stopped the Sharks’ two-game romp over the Taguig Patriots.

A military man, Del Socorro was assigned in Zamboanga while Ponce sustained a knee injury in an early Series 7 game.

But Batangas is also coming of a 14-6 win over Alabang, putting the Bulls back in contention after bowing to the Tigers at home last April 17.
Gametime is at 1 p.m.

The Bulls, the Series 7 runner-up, will pin their hopes on pitcher Vlady Eguia and slugger Vio Roxas with coach Randy Dizer hopeful of the team’s title chances this year.

“I think we are now a deeper team,” said Dizer.

Manila and Alabang try to regain their winning ways at each other’s expense as they slut it out in the 9 a.m. opener.

The Sharks dropped to 2-1 while the Tigers tote an even 1-1 card following their losses last weekend.

Manila and Cebu hurdled their respective rivals in varying fashions to gain the twice-to-beat incentives in the semifinal at the close of the
elimination round of the Dunkin’ Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI at the Felino
Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Taguig City, Sunday.

The Sharks dominated the Taguig Patriots, 7-1, while the Dolphins held off the defending champion Batangas Bulls, 11-8, to advance to the Final Four where they would only need a victory to reach the best-of-three championship series.

Manila faces fourth-seed Alabang while Cebu takes on Batangas again in the semis slated on Saturday, also at the Taguig diamond.

The Dolphins scored five runs in the pivotal fifth inning with Miggy Corcuera and Lorenzo Ubungen hitting two-run RBIs as Cebu turned a 1-2 deficit into a 6-2 lead before holding off the Bulls’ fightback in the last frame to clinch the victory.

Cebu scored first on a double by Edmer Del Socorro to send home Jonash Ponce, who also doubled. But Batangas’ Teddy Landicho cashed in on a throwing error to
tie the game before Vio Roxas scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Charles Catangui in the fourth inning for a 2-1 Bulls’ lead.

National team mainstay Charlie Labrador and Jon Jon Robles took care of the mound and yielded only a run and five hits as the Sharks regained the lead with a
4-1 slate in the tournament presented by Dunkin Donuts and organized by Community Sports Inc.

Christian Galedo drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning to score Nino Tator, who walked, reached second and third after the Patriots failed to draw an
out on Marvin Malig and Ricardo Jimenez.

A double by Ramil Empacis in the third inning sent home Bambol Servo, who also doubled, before Empacis scored on another double by Francis Candela.

The Sharks went 5-0 in the sixth on an RBI single by Saxon Omandac, scoring Empacis after he advanced to third on a walk. Empacis and Galedo added an RBI
each in the seventh and ninth innings, respectively.

Taguig broke a scoring spell on in the eighth, when Christian de Leon hit an RBI double to score Evert Balderrama, who singled and advanced to second on a
passed ball.

Bambol Servo came through with a crucial hit in the ninth inning to score Francis
Candela as Manila pulled off a thrilling 8-7 squeaker over Cebu to wrest the
solo lead in the Dunkin’ Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium yesterday.

Servo, a former mainstay of the defunct Dumaguete Unibikers, came in as a pinch-hitter in the ninth and sent Cebu starter Joseph Orillana’s 130th pitch to deep left field to score second baseman Candela from first base.

The game looked headed for an extended inning when Orillana issued flyouts to catcher
Rommel Roja and left fielder Jarus Inobio but Candela struck a single to left
field before Servo’s game-winning hit in the tournament presented by Dunkin’
Donuts and organized by Community Sports Inc.

“We were lucky,” said Manila coach Joel Palanog. “We know that Cebu won’t give up that
easily so it’s a good thing that the veterans were there until the end.”

The Sharks actually surged to a 6-2 lead in the sixth frame but reliever Jon Jon Robles sputtered on the mound, his first at home since playing professionally in the Czech
Republic.

Lorenzo Ubungen singled in the seventh, reached second on a stolen base and third on a Jonash Ponce single before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Miggy Corcuera.

After a double by Florencio Ubungen, RP Blu Boy Mark Rae Ramirez hit a three-run home
run across the right field fence and out of the stadium to tie the game at 6.

The Sharks then took a 7-6 lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Marvin Malig, scoring Christian Galedo. But the Dolphins tied the game again as Ponce blasted another four-bagger to the left field bleachers.

The tournament is sponsored by Gatorade, Industrial Enterprises Inc., Philippine Transmarine Carriers Inc., Harbour Centre, The Heritage Park with the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Philippine Amateur Baseball Association, Philippine Umpires Association and DZSR Sports Radio 918 as partners.

Manila wrested the lead with four runs in the second inning after Cebu scored two runs in the
first inning. The Sharks added two more in the sixth on a Mike Gante RBI single
before scoring home on two Cebu errors.

Manila starter Charlie Labrador allowed two runs in three hits in 85 pitches while Robles yielded five runs on seven hits on 57 pitches. Orillana, for his part, gave up eight runs in 10 hits in a no-relief job for Cebu.

In the first game, defending champion Batangas bounced back from its opening day loss by routing Taguig, 15-7.

The Bulls put five runs on the board in the fourth, keyed in by a two-run double by Randy De Leon.

Batangas, which lost its opening game against Manila, 5-4, also pounced on the sloppy defense by Taguig, which had 10 errors.
