Bulls bag third place, nip Patriots

Vio Roxas hit the game-winning run in the 10th inning to lift the Batangas Bulls to a 3-2 victory over the Taguig Patriots and capture third place honors in the Baseball Philiippines Series 8 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium, Sunday.
Roxas’ walk-off hit to shallow right field scored Chris Canlas from second base to clinch the victory. Canlas reached first base on a throwing error and second base on a single by Justin Zialcita to move in scoring position.
The Bulls thus salvaged third place after failing to return to the Series 8 finals after losing to the Cebu Dolphins in the semis of the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Pepsi, Rawlings and Gatorade.
Meanwhile, Cebu’s Miggy Corcuera capped his impressive Series 8 performance by bagging the MVP honors in the league also backed by Harbour Centre, The Heritage Park, Emperador Distillers, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Victory Liner and Clark Development Corp.
Corcuera scored three home runs, eight runs and 11 RBIs while hitting a .360 batting average. His outputs in home runs and RBIs also netted him the Home Run King and the Most RBIs plums for Series 8.
Corcuera’s teammate Joseph Orillana took the Best Pitcher award after contributing three wins for the Dolphins while striking out 25 batters, allowing only six runs in 26.2 innings pitched. Another Dolphin Jonash Ponce won the Most Stolen Base award with seven stolen bases.
Taguig’s Denver Largo earned the Best Hitter award for his .428 batting average, 15 hits, .485 slugging percentage and a .490 on-base percentage while Manila coach Jhoel Palanog was named as the Best Manager for leading the Sharks to a 9-1 win-loss card in the elimination round. Ricky Bernabe was named the Best Umpire.
Roxas actually scored the game-tying RBI in the fourth frame for a 2-2 score after Batangas gave up a run on an error in the third to score Jot Angeles.
Largo put Taguig ahead in the first inning with an RBI single but Ferdinand Recto’s double advanced Randy De Leon home to tie the game.

Jon Jon Robles struck out six batters as Manila moved one away from capturing its third straight crown by defeating Cebu, 6-2, Saturday in Game 1 of the Baseball Philippines Series 8 finals at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Robles controlled Cebu’s offense as he yielded seven hits and holding Cebu to two runs in an eight-inning start to move one win away from sweeping the best-of-three championship series of the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Rawlings and Gatorade.

“We tried to put Jon Jon all game as soon as we can and he really did a good job controlling Cebu’s top batters,” said Manila coach Jhoel Palanog.

The Sharks can wrap up the series on Sunday in Game 2 at 1 p.m. after the league also backed by Harbour Centre, The Heritage Park, Emperador Distillers, Philippine Transmarine Carriers, Victory Liner and Clark Development Corp. hand out the individual awards.

The game was delayed for an hour due to rain but Manila scored quickly as former University of Mindanao standout Saxon Omandac doubled to score Francis Candela in the second inning while Christian Galedo crossed home plate on an error in the third.

After Tino Ubungen pushed Cebu’s first run of the game to score Joseph Orillana in the top of the fifth, Manila quickly answered at the bottom of the fifth when Galedo grounded to left field to score Rommel Roja and Jarus Inobio advancing home on a sacrifice fly by Gian Llaguno.

The Sharks added an insurance run in the seventh when Galedo scampered from third base to home plate on a fielders’ choice when catcher Ubungen made a throw to first base in an attempt to put out Nino Tator for a 5-1 lead.

The Philippine Under-18 baseball team beat reigning UAAP champion University of Santo Tomas, 7-0, in the exhibition game.

Manila and Cebu clash on Saturday in the opener of their best-of-three
series for Baseball Philippines Series 8 championship with odds just about even
between the league’s fancied teams.

The Sharks and the Dolphins split their previous faceoffs for the BP crown,
making their third encounter too close to call. Manila beat Cebu to bag the
Series 6 plum last year and avenge their setback in Series 2 finals in 2007.

The Dolphins edged the Sharks, 9-7, in their first round meeting this year,
handing the reigning back-to-back champions their only loss in Series 8. But
Manila got back at Cebu again, hacking out an 8-6 victory right at the Dolphins’
turf last June in the league’s first out-of-Luzon game.

The opener is set at 1 p.m. at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. Game 2 is
set tomorrow (Sunday) while Game 3, if necessary, will be on July 30, according

Manila and Cebu arranged another clash for the championship after overcoming their foes Saturday in the semifinals of the Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The two-time defending champion Sharks put up another defensive stand to defeat Taguig, 2-0, while the Dolphins scattered 15 hits to blow past Batangas, 9-2, to set up their third clash for the title in the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Rawlings and Gatorade.

Cebu and Manila split their two previous title showdowns with the Dolphins taking the Series 2 crown before the Sharks bagged the Series 6 crown.

Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series is set on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Pitchers Charlie Labrador and Jon Jon Robles yielded a combined five hits as the Sharks’ fielders stranded eight runners on base to blank the Patriots to book a place into their fourth consecutive finals dating back to 2008 in Series 5.

Marvin Malig’s RBI singles in the first and eighth inning proved to be enough as pitching and defense did it for the Harbour Centre-backed Sharks.

Cebu’s Jonash Ponce, meanwhile, hit a two-run double in the second inning as the Dolphins put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning backed by a two-run double by Miggy Corcuera.

Dumaguete put five runs on the board in the final inning to outclass Taguig, 8-4, yesterday, foiling the Patriots' bid for the No. 3 spot at the close of the elimination round of Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa.

The Uni-bikers closed out their campaign with a 2-8 record in a tie with the Alabang Tigers for fifth but the loss proved tough for the Patriots, who will now meet top seed Manila in the semifinal round of the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.

The game was tied at 3 at the bottom eighth but Dumaguete took the lead in the ninth after Taguig pitcher Darwin Dela Calzada’s throw to third base after a Carlo Conge bunt went wild, scoring Nelson Salazar.

Salazar then scored on an error before Amber Plaza, Mike Gante and Deo Remollo pushed runners home for a 8-3 Dumaguete lead.

Alfredo Olivarez scored Pepe Jose on a single for Taguig but Dumaguete's Ernesto Binarao completed the game with a ground out to Jeffrey Hardillo to end the game.

Top-seed Manila will thus face Taguig while Cebu will meet Batangas in the semis Saturday with the Sharks and Dolphins holding a twice-to-beat advantages.

Baseball Philippines officials postponed yesterday’s Series 8 games at the Clark Field Parade Grounds in Pampanga due to inclement weather.

Heavy rains brought about by tropical storm “Falcon” forced the league to postpone yesterday’s scheduled games of Manila-Alabang and Cebu-Dumaguete in the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.

The games were actually supposed to be played today but field conditions remained unfit for play.

Manila is currently in first place with an 8-1 record but not far behind is Cebu, which sports a 7-2 win-loss card as they play in the sixth out-of-town game day of the league made possible by Victory Liner, Clark Development Corporation, SM City Clark and San Miguel Corporation.

Cebu needs to win against Dumaguete in order to stay alive in the hunt for the top-seed in the semifinals with Manila. But both Manila and Cebu have already clinched the twice-to-beat edge in the semifinals.

Batangas used a three-run binge in the sixth inning to regain control then leaned on Romeo Jasmin’s solid relief job to pound out a 7-4 victory over Dumaguete, and clinch the third semifinal berth in Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Parade Grounds in Clark Field, Pampanga, Sunday.

“It’s a good thing we recovered in the sixth, then Romeo held on. He really is our closer,” said Barandoc, who took over Randy Dizer, who handles the national softball team competing in the Aspac regional championship in Bacolod City.

CLARK FIELD, Pampanga—Batangas stepped closer to a semifinal berth after blanking Dumaguete, 11-0, Saturday to win its second consecutive game in the Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Parade Grounds here.

Vladymir Eguia pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out nine batters as the Bulls scattered 19 hits to improve to a 4-5 win-loss card for their first back-to-back game after losing four straight games.

The Bulls can clinch a semifinal berth today against the Uni-bikers in the first game at 9 a.m. in Clark.

“We are now a complete team. For now, our goal is just make it to the semifinals,” said Batangas coach Randy Dizer.

In the first game, Taguig prevented several comeback bids by Alabang to hack out an 11-8 victory in Baseball Philippines Series 8 at the Parade Grounds here.

The Patriots led 9-4 after five innings then shook off flashes of rallies by the Tigers in the final four innings to gain a one-game lead in the race for the fourth-and-last spot in the semifinals

With the victory, Taguig improved to 3-5 in this league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade, Rawlings, Philippine Transmarine Corporation, The Heritage Park, Emperador Brandy, Victory Liner, Harbour Centre, Clark Development Corporation and Philippine Sports Commission.

Jeff Hardillo had three RBIs while Ka Sulhay Argel scattered three hits in four at-bats as the Patriots won their second game in three outings.

Argel tripled with two outs in the fifth scoring Christian Paul de Leon, who earlier reached first base on an error, for a 9-4 lead.

The Tigers answered with three runs in the eighth as Marco Martinez drilled a one-out RBI single, scoring Julius Visayas then later touched home on a passed ball before Adrian Bernardo drove home older brother Bocboc to cut the deficit to 9-7.

However, Andro Cuyugan hit a groundout with runners in the corners to end Alabang's side. In the bottom half of the same inning, Justin Payongayong drilled a two-run double to left center to put the lead back to four runs, 11-7.

Alabang threatened anew in the ninth when Cuyugan scored from third on a Martinez single with two outs to pull within three runs. The hit also advanced pinch runner Leslie Suntay from first to third.

On the next at-bat, Taguig pitcher Irvin Tuazon made a fielding error that enabled Arcel Aligno to reach base safely, loading the bases for Bocboc Bernardo.

Bernardo, though, swung on the first pitch thrown by Tuazon that resulted in an easy game-ending flyout to right fielder Wilfredo Hidalgo.

Taguig exploded with eight runs in the final two innings as the Patriots toppled the Dumaguete Uni-bikers, 12-3, for their first victory in Baseball Philippines Series 8 before a huge Sunday crowd at the Banlic Baseball Park in Cabuyao, Laguna.

Justin Payongayong gave up three hits in a six-inning start and the Patriots went on to clobber the Uni-bikers and snap a two-game skid in the league organized by Community Sports Inc. and sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.

Payongayong also shone in offense as he capped the Patriots’ six-run binge in the ninth with a three-run double to put the game away for the Patriots.

Dumaguete took its second straight loss.

Meanwhile, Baseball Philippines officials, led by executive director Nolan Bernardino, Taguig Vice Mayor and Patriots team owner George Elias and Dumaguete team owner Ping Remollo handed over baseball equipment to Cabuyao vice mayor Mel Gecolea, who also heads the town's baseball and softball organization, in simple turnover ceremony before the Taguig-Dumaguete match.

A run-scoring single by Alfredo Olivarez followed by a two-run double by Darwin Dela Calzada opened things up for the Patriots against Dumaguete starter Edward Flores.

Julian Teves ripped an RBI single in the first while Carlo Conge scored on an error in the third inning as Dumaguete closed in at 3-2 but the Uni-bikers failed to sustain their charge against Payongayong’s solid game on the mound.

Taguig broke away in the eighth on a Jeffrey Hardillo RBI single while Dela Calzada scored on another error. The Patriots had a scoring spree in the ninth as Wilfredo Hidalgo hit an RBI single followed by that Payongayong slam into deep left field.

Conge drove home a run in the bottom of the ninth for Dumaguete.

But Batangas is also coming of a 14-6 win over Alabang, putting the Bulls back in contention after bowing to the Tigers at home last April 17.

The Harbour Centre-backed Sharks opened Series 8 with an all-around effort on offense and defense that led to the lopsided victory over the Patriots in this Community Sports Inc.-organized league.

Manila starter and Series 7 Finals Most Valuable Player Charlie Labrador, who was awarded the Jun Bernardino Trophy during the opening ceremony for his positive values on and off the field, got the Sharks going allowing just one hit in four innings.

Marvin Malig capped off Manila’s onslaught on offense with a two-run double in the Sharks’ four-run splurge in the eighth frame that sealed the win in the league sponsored by Gatorade and Rawlings.

“Our mindset is that we are not the defending champions, we still have to work hard for the third championship,” said Manila coach Jhoel Palanog, whose Sharks won their second straight crown against Batangas in Series 7.

Jarus Inobio’s run scoring hit finished off a three-run second inning for Manila before Edward Landicho’s RBI single and Rommel Roja’s sacrifice fly in the next frame gave the Sharks a 5-0 lead.

Former Manila Shark Mick Natividad got the Patriots on the board at the top of the sixth with an RBI single but the Sharks got that back when Inobio crossed home plate on a throwing error and Christian Galedo hit a run-scoring single for a 7-1 advantage.

Jerwyn Fernandez and Jeff Hardillo led Taguig’s two-run eighth but Manila fired back again with Malig finishing off the bottom half of the eighth with a long shot to right field to score Jennard Pareja and Galedo.

Manila goes for the early lead in Series 8 as it faces Taguig once again at 9 a.m. in the first game of a twinbill at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. Batangas, meanwhile, opens Series 8 in front of its home fans as the Bulls battle the Alabang Tigers in Libjo field in Batangas City.

Lt. Villafuerte did not have the same fortune as their co-champions from Calinan as they bowed to a more determined Baguio Elementary School, 9-5, in the elementary division that saw a diminutive young girl Diane Cortez besting all the boys for the tournament MVP plum.

The two finals were reset Sunday after heavy rains rendered the playing field unplayable last Saturday. Calinan peppered the PNJK pitching line with five runs to open with a 5-0 lead on top of the fourth. PNJK made it 5-1 with one run in the bottom fourth. Two more runs made it 7-3 after the fifth but PNJK exploded with a four-run spree in the bottom sixth to tie the game at 7-all.

In the final inning, errors by PNJK gave Calinan four more runs and PNJK can only send one man to the homeplate to seal the win for the defending champs.

Jake Pabustan’s solid effort at the mound netted for him the MVP award in the high school division.

Villafuerte and Baguio, bitter rivals in the elementary leagues, battles to a 5-all standoff by the fourth frame, before Baguio, the reigning DCAA champs, went on a three-run binge for a 6-3 lead at the bottom fifth. Three more runs in the 6th against a lone run by Villafuerte gave Baguio a 9-5 cushion. Villafuerte had one last crack at the top of the 7th but they failed to send a man to the plate to give up the crown they won last year.

It was a fitting end to the sixth season of this annual event organized by the Davao City Baseball Association and sponsored by the Japan Kichijoji Lions Club. Earlier, the tournament opened with PSC Commissioner Joaquin “Chito” Loyzaga gracing the elaborate opening ceremonies. (NJB-DSA)

SOME 20 teams will bid for honors in the 6th Davao City Baseball Cup set on February 11 and 12 at the University of Mindanao (UM) diamonds.

Davao City Baseball Association (DCBA) president Joaquin "Boy" Sarabia, speaking at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn on Thursday, said 14 public school teams will compete in the elementary division and six teams in high school division.

The Lieutenant Colonel Villafuerte Sr. Sluggers will defend its elementary crown in the annual event bankrolled by the Datu Uchida Development Foundation Inc., in cooperation with the Kichijoji Lions Club.

Organizers said cash prizes, trophies and baseball equipment are up for grabs in the event. All participating teams will also receive equipment and transportation subsidies for the tournament.

The meet usually culminates with a grand victory dinner party for champion teams, sponsors and stakeholders at a downtown hotel.

Tatsuo Uchida, a Davao-born Japanese, initiated the project six years ago with grandson Yusuke and Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School administrator Ines P. Mallari to liven up the baseball community in the grassroots.

Souped-up Taguig battles visiting US clouters

A reinforced Forward Taguig side will slug it out with members of the baseball team of the USS George Washington, a carrier set to arrive in Manila, for a one-day friendly game on Sunday at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Taguig City.

Baseball Philippines has taken the initiative to put up a competitive local team to be pitted against an expected strong US squad in the first-ever baseball match featuring Americans since the US bases pullout in 1992.

Gametime is set at 12 noon.

Nino Tator, Jon Jon Robles and Charlie Labrador of the Manila Sharks team in Baseball Philippines Series will be teaming up with Miggy Circuerra of Cebu and Jojo Apurra of Batangas to backstop the Forward Taguig squad.

The USS George Washington will be making a routine stop here with the US and RP officials taking time out to arrange the exhibition game to foster goodwill and camaraderie among the participants.

The US visit also serves as part of its outreach program aimed at benefiting several organizations.

Baseball is actually just one of the sports the American servicemen would be playing while on a four-day break here with basketball, soccer and softball matches also set to be played in various venues.(pr)

Sharks to keep core for next attack

Finally relishing the sweet taste of victory, Manila is keeping the core of its champion squad for another crack at baseball glory in October.

“Hopefully, we will stick with this line-up in the next series,” said Manila coach Jhoel Palanog, moments after the Sharks edged the Cebu Dolphins, 2-1, in their sudden death duel for Dunkin Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI crown last Saturday.

For sure, finals MVP pitcher Jon Jon Robles will be back for another stint after keying the Sharks’ close win over the Dolphins.

For Palanog, it was the biggest and sweetest victory of his career.

Aside from mentoring the Harbour Centre-owned Sharks since 2007, Palanog coached the National University (NU) in the UAAP for eight years where he guided the Bulldogs to the finals in Season 72 before being replaced after the season.

“Whatever I lost (with NU), I gained with this team,” said Palanog. “I hope that I can gain that recognition in coaching with this title.”

The Sharks took the biggest catch in Robles, a two-time MVP in the UAAP with UST and a one-time titleholder in Baseball Philippines with the Makati Mariners during Series I, strengthening Manila’s pitching rotation that includes national player Charlie Labrador.

But after a stint in the Czech Republic, the lefty hurler groped for form in the early stages of the tournament presented by Dunkin Donuts and organized by Community Sports Inc.

“I had a long break,” said the 24-year-old Robles, who yielded just three hits in the title series. “I didn’t play for nine months and I was really out of shape. But as the season went along, I regained my form.”

Mixing superb pitching and a balanced offense, the Sharks dominated the elims with a 4-1 record and then trounced the Alabang Tigers in the semifinal round to gain a crack at the crown.

The Sharks, with Robles’ one-hitter, beat the Dolphins in Game 1, 5-3, but dropped a pulsating 9-10 setback in the second game to set up the winner-take-all match.

But Robles held his ground in the decider, yielding two runs and striking out 10 batters while Nino Tator came through with three doubles, including the go-ahead RBI in the fifth inning to help anchor the win.

Meanwhile, the rubber match will be shown on NBN-4 on Aug. 5 starting at 2 p.m.

Jon Jon Robles pitched a two-hitter in a no-relief job as the Manila Sharks nipped the Cebu Dolphins, 2-1, to capture their first ever crown in the Dunkin Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Barangay Ususan, Taguig City, Saturday.

Dragged into the sudden death by the Dolphins in their best of three series, the Sharks leaned on Robles and third baseman Nino Tator to finally dispose of the former two-time champions and clinch their breakthrough victory in the league presented by Dunkin Donuts/Robles, 24, held his ground on the mound, allowing only two hits and one run in a complete game while striking out 10 batters and retiring the last 24 to bag the finals MVP honors.

Tator, on the other hand, delivered the go-ahead run after slamming his third double of the game in the fifth, scoring Christian Galedo, who singled and stole second base, that proved to be enough to give the Mikee Romero-owned franchise the crown.

It was the Sharks’ first championship after two failed bids – in Series II against the Dolphins and in Series V against the Batangas Bulls.

“We deserve this crown,” said Manila team manager Jhoel Palanog, whose wards took the series opener, 5-3, but lost the next. 9-10, in a thrilling duel. “They made all the sacrifices and they trusted each other.”

Meanwhile, the game will be aired on NBN-4 on Aug. 5 starting at 2 p.m. Manila topped the elims with a 4-1 record and gained the No. 1 seed in the semifinals where the Sharks defeated the Alabang Tigers to reach the finals.

“From the start, we got aggressive in our preseason pick-ups and I think that really started our run,” said Palanog.

Cebu broke the ice after hurler Edmer Del Socorro scored on a groundout by Jonard Pareja in the second inning.

But the Sharks countered in the third on an RBI single by first baseman Marvin Malig that scored Galedo, who reached first on an error and second on a double by Tator.

Then Robles took over.

In the ninth after a groundout on Cebu coach Isaac Bacarisas and Fulgencio Rances, Robles forced a lineout on Joseph Orillana on the first pitch as the Dolphins stormed into the field to celebrate the championship.

“I’m happy with the overwhelming trust the team gave me,” said Robles, who had stint in the Czech Republic and who only yielded a hit in Manila’s 5-3 win in Game 1.

Del Socorro, a native of Toril in Davao City, had a respectable outing in place of Orillana, who was ineligible to pitch Game 3 after exceeding the 50-pitch count rule in Game 2, fanning eight batters but allowing eight hits.

That leaves the cudgels to La Salle pitcher Sebastian Uichico and a bunch of power-hitters led by Game 2 hero Jonash Ponce and Miggy Corcuera.

"Our pitching roster has been depleted," said Cebu team manager Isaac Bacarisas in Filipino. "But there's still a lot of things that can happen in nine innings.

I'm relying on our offense so it's important that the top of the order will deliver."

The Sharks, meanwhile, try to put their act together this time after committing seven errors in Game 2.

"We'll just have to go to our usual game," said Manila team manager Jhoel Palanog. "I told the boys that if the title is for us, it's for us but we need to play hard and stick to our game plan."

The Sharks will also play minus national pitcher Charlie Labrador, who also threw more than 50 pitches in Game 2 with Czech Republic pro lefty Jon Jon Robles, Mick Natividad and Mike Gante tipped to take charge for Manila on the mound.

The winner-take-all match is set July 31 at 1:30 p.m., also at the Taguig venue.

After a single by Fulgencio Rances and a walk by Miggy Corcuera, Ponce doubled off starter Charlie Labrador then he pounced on a fielding error by Manila to give Cebu a 10-7 cushion entering the final inning.

In all, Ponce had four hits in five at-bats and scored four runs in the game.

The Sharks got to within one run in the ninth after Jon Jon Robles and Christian Galedo scored and Francis Candela and Davao del Sur native Saxon Omandac reached second and first bases, respectively. But national pitcher Joseph Orillana got the fina out for Cebu to close out the contest.

Orillana started the game but was assigned to right field after just one inning before returning in the sixth after reliever Christian Maghanoy yielded four runs in the second and third innings.

Cebu never trailed again after Manila scored three runs in the second inning and even led, 7-4, after scoring three runs in the fourth, two of which came on a Ponce single that scored Maghanoy and Ponce.

But the Sharks fought back and tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single by Bambol Servo.

Ponce, however, had other things in mind.

The Sharks, who took the opener, 5-3, proved erratic with seven errors in the game which will be aired on NBN 4 on July 29 starting at 2 p.m.

In an exhibition game, the Taguig Patriots beat the ILLAM All-Stars, 7-2.

Manila moved one win away from claiming its first-ever championship in the Dunkin’ Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI as it repulsed Cebu, 5-3, in Game One of their best-of-three series at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Barangay Ususan, Taguig City, Saturday.

Jon Jon Robles took over from a struggling Charlie Labrador, allowing only one hit in eight innings to steer the Sharks past the Dolphins. Labrador groped for form early as he yielded three runs on three hits in the first, prompting Robles to take charge on the mound.

The Sharks, meanwhile, stormed in the second inning with two runs on RBIs by Christian Galedo and Rommel Roja to break a 3-all count that proved to be the final score as both teams fought to a scoreless game the rest of the way.

“Charlie wasn’t playing well so we decided to put in Jon Jon. He really stepped up,” said Manila team manager Jhoel Palanog.

Jarus Inobio was hit by a pitch, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch before he scored on a Galedo single. Galedo, on the other hand, scored on a sacrifice fly by Roja in the second inning.

The Sharks go for the crown in Game 2 on July 24, also at the Taguig venue, hoping to wrap it all up after two failed title bids, including one against Cebu in Series III of the league presented by Dunkin Donuts and organized by Community Sports Inc.

Cebu surged ahead early at 3-0 as Joseph Orillana, Jonash Ponce and Edmer Del Socorro hit RBIs but Manila came through with a two-run double by Bambol Servo and an RBI single by Ramil Empacis to draw level.

The Sharks actually had the chance to tie the game in the eighth but del Socorro’s long fly ball was foiled by Inobio, stranding Jonash Ponce at third and preserving the lead and the victory for the Sharks.

organized by Community Sports Inc.

Randy Dizer and Isaac Bacarisas, managers of the Batangas Bulls and the Cebu
Dolphins, respectively, will be the men at the helm of the All-Star Team 1 while
Jhoel Palanog and Jimmy Paningasan of the Manila Sharks and Alabang Tigers,
respectively, will lead the All-Star Team 2 in the match tipped to go
down-to-the-wire.

The league’s leading players have been evenly divided with Manila’s Charlie
Labrador and Cebu’s Joseph Orillana teaming up for All-Star Team 1 before
heading to their best-of-three championship series on July 17. They will be
joined in the mound by Ernesto Binarao (Pampanga) and Darwin dela Calzada
(Taguig).

Romeo Jasmin and Vladymir Eguia, the pitching tandem of Batangas, will spearhead
the All-Star Team 2’s bid along with Manila’s Jonjon Robles and Taguig’s Justin
Payongayong.

Completing the All-Star Team 1 roster are Andro Cuyugan and Rizel Santos of
Pampanga, Fernando Recto of Taguig, Edmer Del Socorro of Toril (Davao City), Jonash Ponce and
Fulgencio Rances of Cebu, Francis Candela, Rommel Roja and Nino Tator of Manila
and Chris Canlas and Vio Roxas of Batangas.

The All-Star Team 2, on the other hand, is also composed of Emil Dimatulac,
Jeffrey Ardio and Allen Dizon of Pampanga, Ronald Bocalan of Taguig, Adrian
Bernardo, Kelly Culubong and Matt Laurel of Alabang, Miggy Corcuera of Cebu,
Bambol Servo and Chun Wang Song of Manila and Joseph Apura of Batangas.

The organizing CSI has also lined up a number of activities during and after the
All-Star game in conjunction with the Fil-Am Friendship Day celebrations.

Manila and Cebu took different routes but produced the same results, beating their Alabang and Batangas, respectively, to arrange a showdown for the Dunkin' Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI crown at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Taguig City, Saturday.

The Sharks needed five extra innings to nip the Alabang Tigers, 5-4, and make a return trip to the championship round of the event presented by Dunkin Donuts and organized by Community Sports Inc.

Lorenzo Ubungen capped off a big fifth inning binge by the Dolphins, hitting a two-run single following Joseph Orillana, Miggy Corcuera and Dabawenyo Edmer del Socorro's own RBIs as Cebu scored six runs en route to the victory.

Game One of the finals is set on July 17 with Game Two slated on July 24 at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium.

Game 3, if necessary, will be played July 31, also at the Taguig venue.

Jarus Inobio grounded to center to score Maclyn Samorin in the 13th, capping the Sharks' fightback from two runs down in the ninth.

Samorin walked and reached third after a Jennald Pareja single before Inobio's
game-winning hit.

Inobio also scored the game-tying run in the ninth on a passed ball after Eward Landicho crossed home on a catcher's error to extend the game after trailing, 2-4, after the top of the ninth.

It took five more innings to clinch the game for the Sharks, back in the finals after losing to the Batangas Bulls via sweep in Series V.

"I told the boys to just stay in the game because we just need a run to win," said Manila team manager Joel Palanog.

Manila actually led, 2-0, in the third inning but Alabang's Jay Laurel pushed Bobby Siatong home before he scored on a single by Jay Castro to tie the game in the sixth.

The Tigers took the lead on an RBI single by Laurel in the eighth after his brother Matt singled before gaining a two-run advantage in the ninth on a run-scoring single by Edward Flores that scored Marlon Caspillo, who singled and reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Welvin Vispo.

Alabang threatened in the 10th when Matt Laurel reached third on a two-out single by Jay Laurel. But national pitcher Charlie Labrador came in to replace starter Jon Jon Robles and struck out Castro to foil the Tigers' bid. Labrador yielded just one hit in a superb display of
pitching prowess.

The Dolphins scored five runs in the pivotal fifth inning with Miggy Corcuera and Lorenzo Ubungen hitting two-run RBIs as Cebu turned a 1-2 deficit into a 6-2 lead before holding off the Bulls’ fightback in the last frame to clinch the victory.

Defending champion Batangas scored three runs in the pivotal eighth inning to turn back Alabang, 12-9, Saturday and clinch a semifinal berth in the Dunkin Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI at the Felino Marcelino Baseball Stadium in Taguig City.

Vio Roxas struck a two-run single while Chris Canlas hit an RBI single as the Bulls shattered the 9-all count at the bottom of the eighth en route to victory, their third in four games to match first semifinalist the Manila Sharks’ record.

Romeo Jasmin, Teddy Landicho and Jose Miguel San Juan singled to start off the eighth before Roxas hit one of his five RBIs of the game with a grounder to left field off Alabang losing pitcher Aries Oruga, scoring Jasmin and Landicho. Canlas then singled home San Juan.

The Bulls actually went through some anxious moments in the ninth as Jasmin issued two walks to load the bases. But the MVP in Series V of the league, presented by Dunkin Donuts and organized by Community Sports Inc., frustratedthe Tigers as he struck out Richie Sararia to close out the match.

Jasmin issued nine hits in seven innings in relief and will not play against Cebu on Sunday after throwing 103 pitches, way above the 50-pitch limit.

Batangas, however, still needs to prevail over Cebu at the close of the elims today to notch the twice-to-beat advantage in the semis.

“If we play like this against Cebu, I don’t think we could win,” said Batangas team manager Randy Dizer, referring to his wards’ performance against the Tigers. “They played relaxed because they thought this game will be easy.”

Batangas gave up five runs in the fifth, enabling Alabang to surge to an 8-6 lead. Kevin Cruz brought home Aries Oruga after he walked and stole second base before Cruz scored on a single by Adrian Bernardo. Carlos Laurel reached first on a fielder’s error then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Brother Matt Laurel hit a double to left field to score Carlos Laurel and Bernardo.

But the Bulls countered with three runs in the sixth as Roxas hit a two-run single after Jasmin singled and Landicho walked. San Juan, who went to first after getting hit by a pitch, also scored in that play on an Alabang error.

The Tigers, however, tied the game in the seventh with a single by Matt Laurel, sending home Bobby Siatong, who singled and stole second base.

The Bulls made a fine start with five runs in the first two innings behind a three-run home run by Justin Zialcita in the first and sacrifice flies by San Jose and Roxas in the second.(pr)

Manila earned the first semifinal seat in the Dunkin Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI with an abbreviated 15-7 win over Alabang
yesterday after the game was called off in the sixth inning due to heavy rains and lightning at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa City.

The Sharks built an 11-0 lead midway into the third inning en route to victory in a big rebound to their shock 5-7 setback to
expansion team Pampanga Saturday in the tournament presented by Dunkin Donuts and organized by Community Sports.

Manila had five and four runs in the second and third innings, respectively, with Nino Tator and Saxon Omandac hitting two-run
singles in each frame.

Fil-Am catcher Bobby Siatong belted a two-run homer in the third for Alabang as the Tigers scored five runs. But the Sharks’ lead
proved too big for the hosts to overcome.

Manila hopes to close in on a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis as they go up against Taguig in its last outing on June 20.
Earlier, Justin Zialcita hit five RBIs as Batangas blasted Pampanga, 9-3, to annex its second straight win after an opening day
setback.

Zialcita, a Fil-Am from Pasadena City College, went four-of-five at bat, including a pair of run-scoring doubles in the
second and eighth innings and an RBI single in the fourth to key the Bulls' follow
up win to their 15-7 romp over the Taguig Patriots last week.

It was indeed a big rebound by the defending champions, who dropped a sorry 4-5 loss to the Manila Sharks in the inaugurals of
the tournament.

Batangas team manager Randy Dizer said that the Bulls are slowly regaining their form with the veterans blending well with the
young players.

The Bulls scored four runs in the second as Mark Ong hit a two-run double after Junifer Pinero reached first on a fielding error,
Vladimir Eguia singled and Charles Cantangui was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After two groundouts, Zialcita sent Pampanga starter Allen
Dizon's pitch to left field to score Cantangui and Ong.

Zialcita also doubled in the fourth to send Nick Sarda home, one of the two runs in the inning as the Bulls padded their lead
to 6-0.

With the Bulls up at 7-3 with two outs at the top half of the eighth frame, Pelos Remollo reached third on a single by Josh
Rapaport before Zialcita pushed them to home plate on a single to left field off Ernesto Binarao.

Batangas rotated its pitchers superbly with starter Amber Plaza playing four innings and yielding two runs and a hit. Ong played
two innings in a relief job and issued a hit before UAAP MVP Romeo Jasmin took over in the last three, allowing four hits while striking out three.

Starting pitcher Lorenzo Ubungen, a Fil-Am from San Francisco State University, yielded three hits in four innings for the Dolphins.

"Our bats responded but I have to give credit to Ubungen because he is getting his form back," said Cebu team manager Isaac Bacarisas.

The Tigers scored its first run in the seventh after an RBI single by Gian Llaguno but were held scoreless again.

Bambol Servo came through with a crucial hit in the ninth inning to score Francis
Candela as Manila pulled off a thrilling 8-7 squeaker over Cebu to wrest the
solo lead in the Dunkin’ Donuts Baseball Philippines Series VI at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium yesterday.

Servo, a former mainstay of the defunct Dumaguete Unibikers, came in as a pinch-hitter in the ninth and sent Cebu starter Joseph Orillana’s 130th pitch to deep left field to score second baseman Candela from first base.

The game looked headed for an extended inning when Orillana issued flyouts to catcher
Rommel Roja and left fielder Jarus Inobio but Candela struck a single to left
field before Servo’s game-winning hit in the tournament presented by Dunkin’
Donuts and organized by Community Sports Inc.

“We were lucky,” said Manila coach Joel Palanog. “We know that Cebu won’t give up that
easily so it’s a good thing that the veterans were there until the end.”

The Sharks actually surged to a 6-2 lead in the sixth frame but reliever Jon Jon Robles sputtered on the mound, his first at home since playing professionally in the Czech
Republic.

Against the Bulls, Nino Tator slammed a three-run double and scored a run in the first inning while reliever Mike Gante put up a solid relief job to neutralize the Batangas batters.

The Dolphins, on the other hand, rallied from a two-run deficit as they scored five runs in the eighth inning to beat the Patriots in the tournament sponsored by Gatorade, Industrial Enterprises Inc., Philippine Transmarine Carriers Inc., Harbour Centre, The Heritage Park.

Cebu team manager Isaac Bacarisas said he plans to start national pitcher Joseph Orillana against Manila.

Orillana started at left field against the Patriots but switched positions with Fil-Am hurler Lorenzo Ubungen after the San Francisco State University threw two unearned runs in the third frame.

The tournament is backed by the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Philippine Amateur Baseball Association, Philippine Umpires Association and DZSR Sports Radio 918.

This is the case of the organizers of the 5th Davao City Baseball Cup.
For the fifth straight year, elementary and high school teams in Davao City look forward to a competitive tournament after months of training.
The Tokyo Kichijoji Lions Club and the Datu Uchida Development Foundation officials teamed up with the help of sponsors in order to keep the tournament going on.
Despite the hard times, Davao-born Tatsuo Uchida, whose love for Davao just cannot be measured with words, rallied his friends from the Tokyo Kichijoji Lions Club to share in the tournament.
Otosan, as everyone calls him (meaning “Tatay”), was born in Tibungco, lived along Magallanes St. here and helped in running his father’s abaca business in Calinan. But at the age of 19, he went to Japan, that’s after World War II.
But he could not forget the land of his birth. He said that those who forget their homeland are not human. I was quite astonished by his statement during the DSA Forum because he feels more like a Dabawenyo, a Filipino. I suspect that those 19 years, he lived in Davao, were the most wonderful years of his life.
His father’s remains are in Davao and in his ripe age now, in the presence of his grandson Yusuke, world champion baseball coach Hidetoshi Suzuki and Foundation officer-in-charge Ines P. Mallari, Otosan bared that he intends to be buried beside his father in Davao when the time comes that his eyes shall have closed for the last time and forever.
Otosan’s statements drew applause from the other guests, and there followed a long moment of silence. I guess, many of those present will remember what he said for a long, long time.
The Datu Bago awardee cannot bear the thought that the well-loved sport of baseball which has brought many Davao kids together will die a natural death. But I fear that should Otosan eventually pass away many years from now, Davao baseball would probably die along with him. Unless Dabawenyos who have come to love the sport carry on where he has left.
This is what the Davao City Baseball Association must work on now, to keep the tournament going on for the kids. I am confident that with their honesty and credibility, moneyed company executives will trust that their funds will not go to waste if they will contribute to the development of amateur baseball in Davao.
But, I tell you, this early fellow-Dabawenyos, if you help baseball now, you won’t regret it.

Preparations have started for the 5th Davao City Baseball Cup organized by the Datu Uchida Development Foundation and the Tokyo Kichijoji Lions Club.

The tournament is on February 5 to 6 at the University of Mindanao Matina campus where the best elementary and high school players will vie for the top honors again.

Tatsuo Uchida, a Davao-born Japanese, initiated the project five years ago with grandson Yusuke and Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School administrator Ines P. Mallari to bring into life again a well-love sport, baseball.

The baseball teams seeing action next month are the Bangkal-based A.Mabini School Strikers, the A.Loyola School Tigers of Crossing Bayabas, the Baguio Central School Predators of Baguio District, Bayabas Elementary School of Toril, the Calinan Central School Achievers of Calinan, Catalunan Grande Elementary School Wildcats, the F.Bangoy Central Knights of Sasa, Lt.C.Villafuerte Sr. School Sluggers of Calinan, Mulig Elementary School Slashers of Mulig, Toril, Nikkei Jin Kai International School Nikkeisians of Lanang, Quirino Elementary School, San Juan Elementary School, Talomo Central Elementary School Little Boys and the Wangan Elementary School Cubs in the elementary division.

The high school squads are the Baguio High School of Agriculture Eagles of Tawantawan, Baguio National School of Arts and Trade, Calinan National High School Angels, Crossing Bayabas National High School Sluggers, the F.Bustamante National High School Sailors, the Holy Cross College of Calinan and the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International High School.
